Shanghai, China, August 21, 2025- Toshiba Electronic Components and Storage Devices Co., Ltd. ("Toshiba") announced today the launch of a car mounted optical relay [1] "TLX9161T" that uses a small SO12L-T package. The product has an output voltage resistance of up to 1500V (minimum value), which can meet the requirements of high-voltage car mounted battery applications. The new product will support bulk shipping starting today.

Shorter charging time and longer range are crucial for the popularization and development of electric vehicles, and the key to solving these problems is the more efficient operation of the battery system. The Battery Management System (BMS) achieves efficient system operation by monitoring the charging status of the battery, while also monitoring the insulation between the battery and the vehicle body to ensure the safe use of high-voltage batteries. In addition, BMS uses electrically isolated optical relays to handle high voltage.
Toshiba's new product is a high-voltage optical relay with a minimum output voltage of 1500V, which is a miniaturized version of the Toshiba TLX9160T optical relay. By miniaturizing the size of the built-in MOSFET chip, the SO12L-T package has a mounting area that is about 25% smaller than the SO16L-T package of TLX9160T [2]. In addition, the reduction in size also helps to achieve miniaturization and cost reduction of battery management systems. The pin spacing and pin layout are the same as SO16L-T (Figure 1), and the same pad size design can be used.

The new optical relay uses resin with a relative leakage trace index (CTI [3]) exceeding 600, which belongs to Class I materials in the IEC 60664-1 [5] international standard [4]. The pin configuration ensures that the creepage distance on the detector side is above 5mm [6] (Figure 2). These features comply with the IEC 60664-1 standard and can provide a working voltage of 1000V.

In the future, Toshiba will continue to expand its product line of in vehicle optical relays and provide solutions that can meet the challenges of popularizing electric vehicles, helping to achieve a carbon neutral society.
